Welcome to RAW Festival 2011!

Kia Ora, and welcome to RAW Festival 2011!

RAW celebrates the diversity and creativity found within AUTs School of Art + Design.  AUT University is the University for the changing world and at RAW you will see how the energetic, inspiring and transformative teaching and learning environments have been translated through the studio setting into the high level of work on show.

RAW 2011 is a showcase of the many disciplines found within the School, incorporating Digital, Fashion, Graphics, Product, Spatial and Textile design alongside Visual Arts.  All are disciplines that embrace people, cultures and ideas and where students are given the skills needed to challenge the status quo, to be innovative and to embrace new technologies.  These creative studio practices unite the many disciplines required to operate within the contemporary marketplace.  RAW celebrates both the work of our students and those that teach, guide and lead our student’s successes each year, the lecturers.

This is the second year the School has come together under one umbrella to exhibit the work of the graduating students in both the Bachelor and Post Graduate programmes.  Last year was AD10, as part of AUTs 10 year anniversary celebrations, brought together our history of end of year shows into one forum.  This year we see the addition of work from our Master of Arts Management and Master of Design students.

RAW Festival includes our Schools Inaugural Research Awards, a showing from our CADI students (Certificate of Art & Design Intermediate), our highly respected fashion show ROOKIE, and a satellite show displaying work from Fashion Marketing students.  Check our schedule of events to find the location of each of these.

RAW 2011 is the start of a new tradition, come and join with us in our celebration of creativity!

Designing and producing an event is a bit like directing a live stage production with its uncompromising deadline and tight choreography.

As the School’s Operations and Development Manager at this time of the year I pick up the management of the Festival. My role is to provide a framework for RAW covering all aspects of event management from organizing hospitality, establishing a budget, logistics, safety & risk planning, negotiating, team building to assist the Festival Director and Senior Management.

RAW is a high-wire act the School and a lot of it is about planning, and re-planning, scheduling, and re-scheduling. Being able to diffuse an explosive situation, remain calm and posed to avoid rash decisions under pressure helps.

Rather than cracking the whip, thinking outside the box is the way to go. Despite limited budget resources, the School has a fantastic personnel resource, and our ability to problem solve, to think creatively and to be innovative and transformative to make it a great event.

Some behind the scenes notes: RAW is about transforming over 60 professional teaching spaces into exhibition spaces across 7 disciplines at 3 programme levels, using 660 litres of paint, producing 100 plinths, installing 35 data projectors, 48 computers, moving 20m3 of furniture and equipment before and after the event. It is about engaging with 140 staff, 500 students, teaming up with 5 AUT technical services and 3 partners to deliver a 4 day Festival that will see 3000 visitors passing through.

There is always something that requires a creative solution, quickly and efficiently. Thank you to everyone for working together in the collective goal of making the Festival happen, making it a great event, and putting us on the radar as an innovative and top quality Art and Design School.

Haere Mai ki te Art + Design RAW Festival 2011

Again this year the School of Art + Design is throwing itself at a major Festival celebrating the amazing outpouring of work from our students graduating from pre-degree, undergraduate and postgraduate programmes.

This year we have re-branded our Festival as the RAW Festival – raw energy, risk taking, cutting edge work from our wide range of programmes, including Fashion and Textiles, Graphics, Digital and Spatial Design, Visual Arts, Product Design.

This will be an inspiring event and this year will include student work from the Master of Arts Management and the Master of Design as well as our other postgraduate programmes. Over the days of the Festival, alongside the exhibitions of work, there will also be a range of events and celebrations - the illustrious and dynamic Rookie fashion show will blow people away on Friday 11th, the staff research awards, and satellite Fashion shows at Ironbank on K Rd.

I warmly invite you to attend our RAW Festival for 2011. Staff and students look forward to meeting you during the Festival, and to talking to you about the work and the wealth of new, innovative and individual ideas in art and design.
